Germination of Seeds
Germination = emergence of first root through seed cover
Radicle = first root grows always downwards; orients young plant
Stratification: many seeds only germinate after periods of low temperature (make sure they do not germinate during winter)
Inhibitory hormones may prevent germination until seed becomes wet and inhibitory hormones are washed out of seed shell
Utilization of storage products: starch stored in chloroplasts without chlorophyll = amyloplasts
Plant hormones control germination phases: gibberellins and abscisic acid
