Jawless Fish - the “pre-fish”?
Agnatha = jawless fish
- Hagfish: long, slim, slimy fish on and in mud of temperate oceans; feed on sediment invertebrates; low metabolism, can sustain 7 months without feeding; blind but good sense of smell; commercial use: 5 mill. pounds eaten in Korea, “eelskin” leather (boots, wallets)
- Lampreys: ocean fish that spawn in freshwater, parasites on other fish by tooth-filled, sucking mouth; considered a delicacy in old Europe
