Nutrition: heterotrophic (bacteria feeders) or photoautotroph with chloroplasts; numerous mixotrophic (possess chlorophyll, perform photosynthesis but still can feed on bacteria)
Occurrence: freshwater and marine; important phytoplankton
Red Tides: mass developments that discolor water; toxin production, affect fish, mammals, humans
