Xylem: water-conducting system; made of dead cells with lignin cell walls; water flows in one stream from roots through stem to leaves; enters intracellular spaces of leaf parenchym/mesophyll
- vessels = dead, hollow, cylindrical cells arranged end-to-end
- tracheids = cells overlap and taper at the ends; connected by pits
