Water Transport in Roots
Active uptake of minerals into root cells ? water follows (osmosis)
Water transport either in spaces between cells or through cells and cell membranes inwards
Endodermis: one-cell layer with “impregnated” cell walls = Casparian strips ? further transport has to pass selective cell membranes; control of which minerals/ions reach root xylem
Active uptake of minerals may continue even when transpiration ceases ? continued uptake of water ? pushing water transport up the xylem without transpiration = root pressure
