The Coriolis Effect
  • Any object/matter possesses an eastward momentum due to Earth’s rotation
  • Rotation (angle speed) is lowest (0) at poles and highest (1600 km/h) at equator
  • Objects/matter keep original angle speed when moving latitudinal

  • Northern hemisphere: all currents deflected to the right
  • Southern hemisphere: all currents deflected to the left
  • Also important to balloon drivers (wind deflection) and for ballistics of long-range missiles
