Symmetry in Animals
Two groups of animals: Radiata and Bilateria
Bilateria: bilateral symmetry - body has distinct right and left side, top (dorsal) and bottom (ventral) sidefront (anterior) and back (posterior) end
Evolutionary advantages of bilateral symmetry:
- parts of bodies can develop differently, different organs can be located in different body parts
- movement made more efficient (direction of movement better defined, resistance to water or sediments reduced)
- higher mobility ? more efficient in seeking food, finding mate, avoiding & escaping predators
