Maintaining Species
Species: Individuals that can mate with each other and produce viable and fertile offspring
Sympatric species: species that live in the same environment
Phenotypes: Individuals of the same species living geograph- ically separated can look very different; however, they can mate and produce fertile offspring if brought together (e.g. by migration ? gene flow)
Reproductive isolation: keeps sympatric species apart because individuals of different sympatric species cannot mate and/or produce fertile offspring
- prezygotic isolation: prevents mating and formation of zygotes
- postzygotic isolation: prevents zygotes from developing into fertile offspring
