Growth Forms of Fungi
Multicellular: form filaments = hyphae
Septa connect cells within hyphae; incomplete cell walls
Cytoplasm flows throughout whole hyphae (through septa)
Mycelium: aggregation of many hyphae (Greek for fungus = mykes); major growth form, often invisible, many meters long
Mushrooms, morels - visible erect structures developed for reproduction; interwoven web of hyphae; hyphae can expand rapidly, causing sudden appearance of “mushrooms”
