Groups of Fungi = Modes of Reproduction
4 major phylogenetic groups among fungi show distinct patterns and structures of sexual reproduction
Some term definitions first…
- monokaryotic hyphae: each cell in the hyphae has one nucleus
- dikaryotic hyphae: each cell in the hyphae has two nuclei;show some resemblance to diploid cells because genes from both nuclei may be expressed
- multinucleate hyphae: when septa are incomplete or lacking, numerous nuclei are within one plasma compartment
- homokaryotic: all nuclei are genetically identical
- heterokaryotic: hyphae contain genetically different nuclei from two different individuals
