Epidermis - The Skin of Plants
Epidermal cells cover outer surface of plants; no chloroplasts
Stomata: sites of gas exchange; each stoma consists of two guard cells that contain chloroplasts; 103-106 stomata cm-2; usually more on underside of leaves
Trichomes: hairlike outgrowth of epidermis; single or multiple cells; can produce oils or other secretions
Root hairs: tubular extensions of epidermal cells; not separate cells! At tip of young roots; majority of water & nutrient uptake
