Course Expectations and Grades
Regular class attendance is mandatory. Students are expected to have finished
their reading assignments as outlined in the syllabus prior to each class and are
also expected to use the online learning resources provided by the instructor on
this web site as well as by the textbook publisher on its web site. Students are
warned that from all experience, students who do not attend classes regularly will
in all likelihood fail the class!
The course will provide two mid-term and one final exam. Each of the
two mid-term exams will count for 25% towards the final grade, and the final exam
will count for 50% of the final grade. Missed exams are counted as zero. The second
mid-term exam will cover materials discussed after the first mid-term exam unless
otherwise specified by the instructor in class. Information given in class is
assumed distributed to all students, irrespective of individual student's presence
in class on that specific day. The final exam will be cumulative over the
whole course material; it typically contains ca. 40% of materials discussed after
the second mid-term exam and 60% of materials covered before the second mid-term
exam; these percentages are, however, only rough estimates and students are
expected to be well acquainted with all course materials discussed during the
course of the classes. Materials presented in the textbook but not discussed in
class will not be subject to any exam. All exams will be given on scantron forms.
Students need to have their student ID at hand when taking the exams. There will
be absolutely no make-up exams, no exam drops, or any other extra credit! Exams
will not be curved. Be aware that the permanent grade F- is implemented at FIU
since fall 2004 for students who do not finish at least 60% of the course work. An
incomplete grade to avoid an F grade on the transcript cannot be assigned even
when students know that with the best final exam they cannot pass the class because
their mid-term exam performance was poor (university regulations).
The grade scale is: A: >85%, B: 75-84%, C: 65-74%, D: 55-64%, F: <55%. Plus/minus
grades will be assigned only in the final course grade. Exam and course grades will
be made available on this web page in due time. You can calculate your final course
grade according to:
Final Grade% = 0.25 x Percent(1st mid-term) + 0.25 x Percent(2nd mid-term) + 0.5 x Percent(final)
Convert your final grade percents to final letter grades according to above given
grade scale. With this formula, you can also clarify which final exam grade you
need to reach to gain a desired letter grade once you know the results from the
two mid-term exams.
Example Quizz
In due time, an example quizz will be posted here to acquaint you with the type of
questions you can expect in the exams. This online example quizz is for your own
leisure and will not count towards your grade. However, it is recommended that you
check this web page in due time and work through the example questions as a training
for the upcoming first mid-term exam.
